Grok Bot
Grok Bot Group Chats, Voice Chat and X Chat: How They Work
A Grok Bot group chat puts two to six of your Bots in one conversation, where they reply in the group and @ hands a request to one Bot. Bots can also message each other to hand off work. Voice chat is a live call with one Bot, and X Chat needs a plan that includes Grok Bot.

How do Grok Bot group chats work?
Use a group when several Bots need one shared outcome and you want the handoffs visible. Choose New chat, select two to six Bots, and describe the outcome and who owns the next step. You can also add a teammate's published Team Bot, though not alongside Bots that run on your own computer.
Once the group is running, the Bots answer in the group. Write normally and they decide who responds, type @ and a name to hand a request to one Bot, and keep @everyone for updates the whole group needs. The docs suggest a kickoff that assigns one owner per stage, along these lines.
@Researcher gather the source material and link every claim. @Writer turn the findings into a launch draft. @Reviewer check the draft against the sources and list only blocking issues. Don't publish anything.
Your own messages in a group can carry attachments. Handoff messages from a Bot to the group are text-only, though, so if one Bot needs to inspect an image, the Bot holding it should send it directly to that teammate.
Renaming works like it does for a Bot: right-click the group in the sidebar and choose Rename chat, or click the group's name at the top and edit it in its details. On the phone, tap the name, then Edit, change Name and tap Done. To change what the group is for, tell the Bots in it.

Why does a Bot reply somewhere other than the group?
Because a Bot can also message you in its own chat, or message another Bot to hand off work, and those messages land in the Bots' own chats rather than the group. That is usually the explanation when a group looks quiet but something clearly happened.
To keep replies in the group, say so there: "Reply here in the group. Don't message me privately about this." To make it stick across future groups, ask each Bot to remember it. Each Bot has its own memory, so one Bot remembering the rule does nothing for the others, and the Grok BotAn early AI teammate product from SpaceXAI and Cursor that works across apps on a persistent cloud computer and asks for approval on selected actions; launch materials describe it as beta, but Cursor says Beta Services terms do not apply. Press Enter for the full definition. memory guide explains what each one carries into a group.
Replies in a group and messages between Bots both count toward your usage. Fewer Bots in a group means fewer replies, so a six-Bot group for a two-Bot job costs more for no gain. The pricing guide covers how usage is counted.
Group chats also lack the per-Bot Notifications switch that individual Bots have, so the sidebar is where you see that a group needs you.
How do Bot-to-Bot messages and handoffs work?
A Bot can send an asynchronous message to another Bot, which wakes, handles the request and can reply later. You see the handoff in the conversation. The docs recommend this when one Bot owns a source system and another owns the deliverable, or when a long-running job should continue without you routing each step, and they ask for a single owner at each stage because parallel handoffs produce duplicate work.
There is no switch to stop Bots messaging each other. They do it to hand off work, and they follow your instructions about it, so the control is a message: "Don't message other Bots. Ask me first." Ask each Bot to remember that if you want it to last, and if one keeps starting new work anyway, open that Bot's chat and ask it to stop. A noisy helper Bot can be quieted by turning off its notifications or hiding it.
Slack adds a wrinkle. A handoff needs a Bot acting for one person on that turn, and where you ask decides whether that is true.
- Bot
- Personal Bot
- Where you ask
- The app, or your own Slack DM with it
- Can it message other Bots?
- Yes, acting for you
- Where the reply lands
- The app chat, not Slack
- Bot
- Personal Bot
- Where you ask
- A Slack channel thread
- Can it message other Bots?
- No, the thread is shared
- Where the reply lands
- The Bot says it can't do that
- Bot
- Team Bot
- Where you ask
- A Slack channel thread or Slack DM
- Can it message other Bots?
- Yes, to that person's own Bots
- Where the reply lands
- The same Slack thread
| Bot | Where you ask | Can it message other Bots? | Where the reply lands |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal Bot | The app, or your own Slack DM with it | Yes, acting for you | The app chat, not Slack |
| Personal Bot | A Slack channel thread | No, the thread is shared | The Bot says it can't do that |
| Team Bot | A Slack channel thread or Slack DM | Yes, to that person's own Bots | The same Slack thread |
So handing work between Bots from a Slack channel means sharing a Team Bot and adding it to Slack, where it gets its own app and handle. Team Bots covers that setup.
How do you start a voice chat with a Bot?
Voice chat is a live spoken conversation with one Bot, in the desktop app or the phone app. The button only appears when the message box is empty, which is the detail most people miss.
- 1Open the chat with the Bot.
- 2Leave the message box empty.
- 3Choose Start voice chat, the waveform button in the message box.
- 4Allow microphone access if your computer or phone asks. The call shows Connecting… on desktop or Calling… on the phone, then the Bot starts talking.
During the call you can Mute, Hang up, Show transcript, and open Show settings to change the Voice, Speed and Language, where Auto-detect picks the language from what you say. You can open other chats while it runs and go back with Return to the voice chat on desktop. Only one call runs at a time; starting another asks End the current voice chat? and End and Chat switches.
Voice typing is a different feature. Start voice input (⌘D on Mac, CtrlD on Windows and Linux) or Start dictation on the phone turns speech into text you edit and send, and the Bot replies in text. On the phone, stop dictation before starting a voice chat.
What happens after a voice chat, and where does it not work?
When you hang up, a Voice chat card appears in that Bot's chat with the call length, and opening it shows the full transcript. If the call left work to do, the Bot may follow up in the chat. The Bot can also draw on earlier calls and your recent chat in later voice chats, and you can ask it about a call afterwards.
- Group chats: no voice. Voice works with one Bot at a time, so open that Bot's own chat.
- Team Bots: on desktop you can voice chat with a teammate's Team Bot from your own chat with it.

Frequently asked questions
How many Bots can be in a group chat?
Two to six. Choose New chat, select the Bots, and describe the outcome and who owns the next step. You can also add a teammate's published Team Bot, but not alongside Bots that run on your own computer.
How do I stop Bots from messaging each other?
There is no switch. Tell the Bots in the chat, for example "Don't message other Bots. Ask me first," and ask each Bot to remember it. If one keeps starting new work, open its chat and ask it to stop.
Can I voice chat in a group chat?
No. Voice chat works with one Bot at a time. Open that Bot's own chat to start a call.
Can a Bot message other Bots from Slack?
A personal Bot can from the app or your own Slack DM, and replies land in the app. In a Slack channel thread it cannot. A Team Bot can, from a channel thread or DM, acting for the person who mentioned it.
Why can't I use Grok Bot in X Chat?
It is rolling out gradually and needs the latest X app. You also need a plan that includes Grok Bot, a personal Cursor account (not on a team, not on a company-managed email domain, not on a legacy request-based plan) and a verified Grok email.
